Medical Sieve: The Radiology Grand Challenge

After the success of Watson Jeopardy challenge, IBM Research is investigating a new grand challenge across world-wide IBM Research Labs called the Medical Sieve Radiology Grand Challenge. The goal of Medical Sieve is to develop a cognitive assistant machine for radiologists and cardiologists to assist them in their clinical decision making. The key research problems addressed in the project are (a) disease understanding by diagnostically interpreting medical imaging datasets, (b) modeling and assembly of top-down and bottom-up clinical knowledge and its use in clinical reasoning, and (c) intelligent filtering or summarization of content for presentation to clinicians. Each of these is resulting in exciting new breakthroughs in disease detection in cardiovascular, breast, and other radiology imaging through development of novel feature extraction and machine learning algorithms. In this talk I will give an overview of the Medical Sieve project covering the world-wide effort across the research labs and present our research in cardiac image analysis in ultrasound, angiography, CT and MRI imaging.
Bio of Speaker:
Dr. Tanveer Syeda-Mahmood is a Senior Manager at IBM Research- Almaden Labs, and the Chief Scientist/overall lead for the world-wide Medical Sieve Radiology Grand Challenge project in IBM Research. She graduated from the MIT AI Lab in 1993 with a Ph.D in Computer Science under Prof. Eric Grimson. Prior to IBM, she worked as a Research Staff Member at Xerox Webster Research Center, Webster, NY. She joined IBM Almaden Research Center in 1998.
Prior to coming to IBM, Dr. Syeda-Mahmood led the image indexing program at Xerox Research and was one of the early originators of the field of content-
based image and video retrieval. Currently, she is working on applications of content-based retrieval in healthcare and medical imaging. Over the past 30 years, her research interests have been in a variety of areas relating to artificial intelligence including computer vision, image and video databases, medical image analysis, bioinformatics, signal processing, document analysis, and distributed computing frameworks. She has over 200 refereed publications and over 80 filed patents.
Dr. Syeda-Mahmood was the General Chair of the First IEEE International Conference on Healthcare Informatics, Imaging,and Systems Biology, San Jose, CA
2011. She was also the program co-chair of IEEE Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition Conference (CVPR) in 2008 and has organized several workshops at MICCAI, CVPR, ICCV over the years. Dr.Syeda-Mahmood is a Fellow of IEEE, a member of IBM Academy of Technology, and an IBM Master Inventor.
