Title:                Topology Optimisation Of Composite Laminates

Abstract: Composite structures are thought of as a suitable means to reduce weight in weight critical applications such as aerospace and high end automotive vehicles. Novel composite structures aim at improving the efficiency of existing structures even further by introducing non-conventional design concepts. In this talk two concepts are introduced and discussed. First, the use of topology optimisation to determine the optimal layout of composite plates is considered. Second, the methods developed are extended to design composite variable-thickness plates by allowing discrete ply drops. It is shown that thickness variation can lead to marked increase in structural performance especially when combined with the use of curved fibres through steering.

Biograph:dr. Mostafa Abdalla. Associate Professor at Delft University of Technology. He received his B.Sc. and M.Sc. from Cairo University, Egypt, and his Ph.D. from Delft University of Technology, the Netherlands.

Dr. Abdalla specialises in structural optimisation of composite structures. His particular interests involve the development of optimisation algorithms suitable for large scale problems where a large number of variables needs to be handled.

 

Practical problems calling for such developments involve topology optimisation of three-dimensional structures and the design of composite structures. Over the years, dr. Abdalla has been involved in many national and European projects in the aeronautics, space and energy sectors.
