Abstract: 

Cold particle gas spray, or simply, cold-spray (CS) is a manufacturing method used to form a thick coating by impacting powder particles onto a substrate with supersonic velocities. The powder is accelerated through a supersonic nozzle but remains well below the melting temperature prior to impact. The relationships between the powder properties, processing parameters and the quality of the final coating are topics of research interest in our group of four PIs at NU. In particular, we are interested in discovering the bonding mechanism(s) which may very well be different for different materials. In this presentation an overview of mechanics of high velocity (102-103 m/s) particle impacts is provided. An experimental setup specially designed to determine the high strain rate (107 - 108) material behavior of materials by impacting single particles with sapphire and metal substrates will be described. A bilinear version of a phenomenological flow stress model calibrated based on these single particle experiments will be introduced. Mechanisms of a material instability in the internal regions of the powder will be presented. An idea to determine the bonding energy between the particles based on impact experiments will be discussed. This ongoing work is useful in uncovering the fundamental mechanics of particle bonding in the CS technology.

 

Biograph

Sinan Müftü received BS and MS degrees in mechanical engineering from the Middle East Technical University in Ankara, Turkey, in 1987 and 1989, respectively, and PhD degree in mechanical engineering from University of Rochester in 1994. He is a 1982 graduate of the Ankara Fen Lisesi. He was a postdoctoral fellow at Penn State, and research scientists at the Haystack Observatory of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he worked on VLBI tape drives. He is currently a Professor of mechanical engineering at Northeastern University in Boston, MA and has affiliated appointments in the Civil & Environmental Engineering and Bioengineering departments. He was a visiting associate professor in the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department of MIT during the 2007-2008 academic year. He was elected a fellow of the ASME in 2007. He is an associate editor of the ASME Journal of Tribology, and serves on the review board of the International Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Implants. His research interests are in applied mechanics problems in tribology and bioengineering including mechanics of axially translating materials, high velocity impact of particles and bone remodeling.
