99.999% Availability = At most 5.26 minutes of downtime per year
Ahmet Bulut
İstanbul Şehir University
The quality of service at Internet giants is measured by the service downtime. Competition
is fierce, therefore any lack of focus and diligence takes its toll in millions of dollars at the
very least, and a blow to the brand reputation at large. Therefore, it is of utmost
importance to keep the Internet service up and running 24/7. No human can stand a
chance at that pace. Records of service downtime catastrophes indicate the human error
apparent in all incidents. In the long term, the on-duty service has to be provided by
robots. This is advantageous and probably the only viable option. In this talk, we will see
how fairly-well-trending Cloud Computing can help companies achieve 99.999% uptime.
Bio. Ahmet Bulut received his B.Science in Computer Engineering from Bilkent University
in 2000, and his PhD in Computer Science from University of California Santa Barbara in
2005. Between 2005 - 2007, Dr. Bulut worked as Research Scientist at Citrix Online on
scalable and highly available internet services. Between 2007 - 2009, he worked as a
Senior Research Engineer at Like.com, a silicon valley e-commerce startup. Like.com got
acquired by Google in 2010, and after that Dr. Bulut has joined İstanbul Şehir University's
Computer Science Department. Dr. Bulut's research interests include cloud computing,
internet advertising, information and communication technologies for intelligent
transportation systems, and sensor networks.
