Effect of Nanoclay Amount and Compatibilizer Presence on Thermal, Morphological and Mechanical Behaviour of Nanoclay Reinforced Composite Polypropylene Cast Film

Three different types of polypropylene (PP) films; pure PP film (without compatibilizer and nanoclay), nanoclay reinforced PP film without compatibilizer and nanoclay reinforced PP films with compatibilizer were manufactured. The aim of this research is to study the effect of nanoclay amount and compatibilizer presence on thermal, morphological and mechanical properties of PP cast films. For the study PP pellets, Cloisite® 15A organically modified montmorillonite clay and Fusabond® P M613-05 compatibilizer were used. In the production process twin screw extruder and single screw extruder were utilized. Reinforced films were produced with 1 %, 3 % and 5% nanoclay contents with 3 different compatibilizer amounts to examine if nanoclay addition changes properties and mechanical performance of the films in the same manner with different compatibilizer amounts. SEM was used for the morphological analysis. Nanoclay dispersion in polymeric films was analyzed by the help of SEM micrographs. In order to find out the change in melting and decomposition temperatures DSC and TGA analysis were performed on the films. It was determined that melting points of the films slightly increase as the nanoclay content increases. Also as the nanoclay content increases, decomposition temperatures increase. Mechanical performance analyses were done in order to examine the change in tensile strength, burst strength and tear strength of the polymeric films. It was discovered that the nanoclay content has an effect on the tensile, burst and tear strengths of the films produced. In addition to this it was observed that the increase in nanoclay content changes strain and extension values for reinforced films due to nanoclay dispersion.
