Introduction Sabanci University Telecommunications Group has been awarded a research grant by Cisco Systems, San Jose, CA for a project entitled "Wireless LANs with Smart Antennas". The aim of the project is to develop an efficient Medium Access Protocol (MAC) and scheduler that enhances capacity of wireless local area networks with smart antennas. The project has started in February 2003 under the supervision of Dr.Ozgur Gurbuz. Graduate student Erdem Ulukan was selected as the research assistant for the project. Most of the existing work on smart antenna systems, is intended for the physical layer for establishing more reliable links while increasing the number of users in wireless systems such as wireless LANs. In this project, we are interested in the media access control aspect; how the MAC needs to be modified to achieve these goals. OPNET Modeler is used during the project.
