Title: Improving Face Analysis Using Expression Dynamics

Abstract: Most of the approaches in face analysis rely solely on static appearance. However, temporal analysis of expressions reveals interesting patterns. In this talk, I will describe automatic spontaneity detection for human smiles using facial dynamics. We have recorded spontaneous and posed enjoyment smiles of hundreds of visitors to the NEMO Science Centre in Amsterdam, thus creating the most comprehensive smile database ever: the UvA-NEMO Smile Database ( Our findings on this publicly available database show that facial dynamics go beyond expression analysis. I will discuss how we can use expression dynamics to improve age estimation, kinship verification, and assessment of depression severity.

Bio: Hamdi Dibeklioglu received the B.Sc. degree in computer engineering from Yeditepe University, Istanbul, Turkey, in 2006, the M.Sc. degree in computer engineering from Bogazici University, Istanbul, in 2008, and the Ph.D. degree in computer science from the University of Amsterdam, Amsterdam, The Netherlands, in 2014. He is currently a Post-Doctoral Researcher with the Pattern Recognition and Bioinformatics Group, Delft University of Technology, Delft, The Netherlands. He is also a Guest Researcher with the Intelligent Systems Lab Amsterdam, University of Amsterdam. Earlier, he was a Visiting Scientist at Carnegie Mellon University and University of Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh, USA. His research interests include computer vision, pattern recognition, and automatic analysis of human behavior. Dr. Dibeklioglu is a Program Committee Member for several top tier conferences in the areas of computer vision, pattern recognition, multimedia, and affective computing. He is Co-Chair for the Netherlands Conference on Computer Vision 2015, and Local Arrangement Co-chair for the European Conference on Computer Vision 2016. He served on the Local Organization Committee of the eNTERFACE Workshop on Multimodal Interfaces in 2007 and 2010.
