Coexistence in System on Chip

Abstract: Coexistence is defined as the operation of two or more circuits at the same time without affecting or degrading the others operation. The current trend of miniaturization dictates to put as many circuits as possible on a single silicon die. Therefore, on a single chip the whole system with RF frontend and digital backend including media access control layer is realized. This high level integration creates significant challenges regarding to operation of multiple sensitive circuits, such as low noise amplifiers, voltage controlled oscillators, and etc. on the same silicon with noisy circuits such as digital circuits, switched-mode power supplies. Coexistence problem is divided into three parts; aggressor circuit, coupling path and victim circuit. Aggressor circuits and mitigation techniques, such as clock frequency switching, pulse suppression, and spread spectrum, are presented. Coupling path, such as capacitive, inductive, substrate, and thermal, are also introduced. Coexistence mitigation techniques, such as differential topology, time domain techniques, shielding and guard ring, of victim circuits are also mentioned. 

Biography: Associate Professor Burak Kelleci received the B.S. and M.Sc. degrees in electrical and communication engineering from Istanbul Technical University, Istanbul, Turkey, in 1998 and 2001, respectively. He received his Ph.D. degree from Texas A&M University, College Station, in the Analog and Mixed Signal Center (AMSC) in 2007. From 1998 to 2000, he was with ITU ETA Foundation ASIC Design Center, Istanbul, Turkey, as a Design Engineer. In 2000, he joined Alcatel-Teletas Microelectronic Design Center as an RFIC Design Engineer. During the summer of 2004, he worked at Conexant in the System on Chip Group. From 2006 to 2010, he was employed by Texas Instruments, Dallas, as a system design and integration engineer at Wireless Terminal Business Unit. In 2010, he joined the Electrical and Electronics Engineering Department at Okan University as an Assistant Professor. In 2015, he became Associate Professor and department head of electrical and engineering department at Okan University. He conducted various industry projects and published 16 papers in international conferences and journals. His current research interests include analog and mixed-signal circuits and systems, digital circuits and systems, high-frequency circuit design and coexistence of analog and digital circuits.
