Title: Multi-scale Modeling of Quenching and Tempering of a Hot-work Tool Steel for the Prediction of Residual Stresses

In the first part of this study, the mechanical properties necessary for the simulation of tempering of an AISI H13 (DIN 1.2344, X40CrMoV5-1) tool steel was derived using physically based precipitation simulations and microstructure-property relationships. For this purpose, the precipitation of fine carbides were simulated using a thermo-kinetic software which allows prediction of the evolution of precipitation/dissolution reactions and the particle sizes. Then, those microstructural findings were coupled with physically based microstructure-property models to predict the yield stress, flow curve and creep properties. The predicted mechanical properties were verified with corresponding experiments and a good agreement was found. In the second part, those properties were coupled with a Finite Element (FE) heat treatment simulation model in order to predict as-quenched residual stresses and their relaxation during tempering. The results are validated with XRD residual stress measurements and show a good agreement with the experiments.
Asst.Prof.Dr.Caner Simsir had his BSc., MSc and PhD. degrees from the Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering of Middle East Technical University (METU), Turkey in the field of material modeling and simulation of heat treatment of steels. After his PhD., he worked as a research associate in Collaborative Research Center “SFB570 – Distortion Engineering” at Stiftung Institut für Werkstofftechnik (IWT-Bremen) on simulation and material modeling of heat and surface treatments considering the effects of prior manufacturing operations.
In between 2011-2016, he worked as the vice-chairman of “Metal Forming Center of Excellence” of Atilim University, Ankara, Turkey. He is the founder and the director of “Residual Stress”, “Advanced Thermo-mechanical Characterization and Physical Simulation”, “Integrated Computational Materials Engineering” laboratories and research groups.
His research interests include multi-physics and multi-scale modeling of manufacturing processes, physical simulation, prediction and measurement of residual stresses. He published numerous papers and contributed to several international handbooks including welknown ASM Handbook.
