3mt

Three Minute Thesis (3MT™) is a research communication competition developed by The University of Queensland in Australia. It aims to cultivate students’ academic, presentation, and research communication skills. Presenting in a 3MT competition increases students’ capacity to effectively explain their research in three minutes, in a language appropriate to a non-specialist audience

On May 8th, 2019 , Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences organized the Three Minute Thesis (3MT) Competition. 11 successful FENS PhD candidates presented their research, each in three minutes. At this exciting and fun day, after thoughtful deliberation, our panel of guest judges declared the winner and the runner-up:

Ahmet Özemre

Ahmet Özemre received his BS and MSc degrees from Ege University Chemical Engineering Department in 1989 and 1992 respectively, and completed his PhD in Biotechnology at Federal Technical University Zurich Switzerland (ETH) in 1996. He served as Deputy Production Manager in Roche Pharmeceuticals Istanbul (1997-2001), Director of Corporate Afairs in IEIS (2001-2004), Plant Manager in Kimteks A.S. (2004-2006) and Deputy General Manager at Kalekimya Group (2006-2016). Since 2017, he is the Director of BER&AL Consultancy

Emre Erol is an assistant professor at the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at Sabancı University. He completed his Ph.D. at Leiden University’s School of Middle Eastern Studies, where he also worked between 2009-2016 and his M.A. (history) and his undergraduate studies (political sciences) at Sabanci University. His doctoral dissertation is published as a book titled The Ottoman Crisis in Western Anatolia / Turkey’s Belle Époque and the Transition to a Modern Nation State by I.B. Tauris in 2016.

Dr. Fazilet VARDAR-SUKAN is a Chemical Engineer with a PhD in Biochemical Engineering from University College London. She is the founding head of the Bioengineering Department at Ege University and was the head of Department between 2000-2017. She is a pioneer in the field in Turkey and is the holder of 1989 Turkish Scientific and Technological Council Incentive award in Bioengineering. She was the Director of Ege University Technology Transfer Office and Coordinator of Enterprise Europe Network-Izmir. Her skills and expertise as a technology Transfer professional are internationally recognized, endorsed through her RTTP Certificate and EuKTS Grandfather Certificate. She is also the vice president of USIMP (University-Industry Collaboration Centers Platform of Turkey, a member of EPO Academy Advisory Board and represents Turkey on ATTP Board, AUTM International Committee, ASTP- NAAC and EuKTS Board.

Reyhan Oksay graduated from Arnavutköy American College in 1971. She studied Business Administration in Middle East Technical University and graduated from Bogaziçi University with a degree in Business Administration in 1975. She worked in Mobil Oil Türk A.S for 16 years in Finance and Planning Departments and 23 years in ‘Cumhuriyet Bilim Teknoloji’ Magazine. Since 2015, she is the Assistant Publishing Director in ‘Herkese Bilim Teknoloji’ Magazine.

F. Tevhide Altekin received her BS, MSc and PhD degrees in Industrıal Engineering from the Middle East Technical University. Since 2007, she is working as a faculty member at School of Management, Sabancı University. Her research interests are in the fields of closed loop supply chain management, with a focus on the design of disassembly lines and reverse logistics networks; and manufacturing operations management, with emphasis on assembly line balancing problems, production planning problems in additive manufacturing and designing spare part distribution networks.

3MT 2019 program

At every level of the competition each competitor will be assessed on the judging criteria listed below.

Comprehension and Content

  • Did the presentation provide an understanding of the background and significance to the research question being addressed, while explaining terminology and avoiding jargon?
  • Did the presentation clearly describe the impact and/or results of the research, including conclusions and outcomes?
  • Did the presentation follow a clear and logical sequence?
  • Was the thesis topic, research significance, results/impact and outcomes communicated in language appropriate to a non-specialist audience?
  • Did the presenter spend adequate time on each element of their presentation - or did they elaborate for too long on one aspect or was the presentation rushed?

Engagement and Communication

  • Did the oration make the audience want to know more?
  • Was the presenter careful not to trivialise or generalise their research?
  • Did the presenter convey enthusiasm for their research?
  • Did the presenter capture and maintain their audience’s attention?
  • Did the speaker have sufficient stage presence, eye contact and vocal range; maintain a steady pace, and have a confident stance?
  • Did the PowerPoint slide enhance the presentation – was it clear, legible, and concise?
