Title: Data Science with a Probabilistic View
Date/Time: 4 March, 2020 / 13.40-14.30
Place: FENS G032
Abstract: In this seminar, I will start by introducing the term ``data science" mainly from my perspective and by comparing it with classical scientific research. Then, I will present two case-studies by putting them into the data-science framework. The aim of both of the case-studies is on obtaining person- and time-specific predictions. After that, I will continue with the concept of automated and optimal decision-making that aims to maximise immediate and future rewards. Within this framework, I will mention about on-going works of mine and my future plans.
Bio: Dr. Asar received his BSc and MSc degrees, in 2009 and 2012, respectively, in Statistics from the Middle East Technical University. During his MSc, he worked at the same place as a teaching and research assistant. Then, he moved to Lancaster University to pursue his PhD studies in Statistics and Epidemiology, by a Health e-Research Centre studentship. His PhD works can well fit into the area of medical informatics. After obtaining his PhD in 2015, he held a short-term post-doctoral post at the same place. Since 2016, he has been an assistant professor at Acıbadem University. His research interests are mainly on developing novel methods and software implementation that would feed automatic decision-making systems.
