Abstract:A critical challenge for modern system design is accommodating the increasing demand for performance in a tight power budget. To address this challenge, it is essential to understand theoretical and practical limits of computation as we know it today. In this talk, we will discuss historical trends and driving technological forces, current practices, and why energy efficiency has become the utmost pressing issue for computing systems. We will cover a subset of promising ways to improve energy efficiency, including novel computing paradigms: brain-inspired computing, in particular. We will talk about possible benefits, as well as challenges of realization of computing systems that are inspired by how the brain operates. At the end, we hope to make it clear that addressing the energy efficiency challenge of computing requires significant overhaul on existing computing paradigms and system design which would necessitate re-thinking of the whole system stack, starting from device technologies, all the way up to algorithms and applications.

Bio: Dr. Akturk is an Assistant Professor in the Computer Science Department of Ozyegin University (OzU) where he leads the Computer Architecture and System Technologies Lab. Before joining OzU, he served as an Assistant Professor at University of Missouri, Columbia, for four years. He obtained his Ph.D. from University of Minnesota, Twin Cities. He is an expert in computer architecture, and his research interests cover all aspects of energy efficient computing. In particular, he is interested in emerging computing paradigms, such as brain-inspired/neuromorphic computing.
