Title:Bioinformatics methods for the analysis of NGS data in cancer and bacterial genomics

Date/Time:23 November 2022 / 13:40 - 14:30

Location: FENS L045

Abstract:Genomics, the study of the entire DNA content of a cell or organism, is now a rapidly developing field of biology, mainly owing to the technological advances in DNA sequencing. Here I would like to present our recent cancer and bacterial genomics projects and describe the modern bioinformatics approaches used in these studies. Our cancer genomics projects include the application of the analysis of mutational signatures for studying human cancer mutagenesis for the particular endogenous mutagen - APOBEC family enzymes and a study of the chromosomal translocations in pediatric leukemia using RNA-sequencing data. Our bacterial genomics projects are devoted to the identification of the genomic antimicrobial resistance (AMR), and virulence determinants of the K. pneumoniae caused severe invasive disease in immunocompromised pediatric patients and the development of the machine-learning model for predicting metabolic capabilities of microbial communities using metagenomic NGS data.

Bio: Marat graduated from the Applied Mathematics Department at the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology. He defended his Candidate of Sciences thesis in Computer Science at the Laboratory of Artificial Intelligence, ISA RAS, under the supervision of Professor Vladimir Arlazarov, who is known for developing the first world chess champion computer program Kaissa. Then, he spent three years as a postdoc at the laboratory of Professor Andrei Osterman at the Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute, La Jolla, USA, participating in projects related to the biological regulatory network reconstruction, computational drug discovery, and chemoinformatics. On his return to Moscow, he worked on various bioinformatics projects under the supervision of Professor Mikhail Gelfand. He co-authored papers in high-impact journals, including Lancet Onc., Cell Rep., NAR, Science, and Nature. Marat’s current research interests include cancer bioinformatics, bacterial regulatory networks, protein structure, and medical imaging.
