FENS Fellowship FAQ

Admission Process

The applications are open all around the year and are cumulatively evaluated at the end of every other month. Please check FENS Fellowship Opportunities page for the most recent deadline.
Yes, this is sufficient. They will be your mentors / collaborators depending on your research plan. Note that we are expecting an independent research plan from fellow candidates.
Please provide a time plan which makes sense for your domain with clearly identified milestones and time intervals.
A proven research record consists of accepted or published journal papers, conference proceedings and book chapters. Having participated in research projects as principal investigator and/or researcher is a plus.
Sabanci University has an international setting, so we have experience in bringing foreigners over. Our Human Resources unit provides the fellow specific information on visa applications after the official offer is made.
The evaluation process typically takes 4 to 6 weeks.

Benefits & Housing

The fellow is free to use the research funds for domestic or international conference expenses or journal fees. There is no restriction. Note that there is no additional funding available for journal fees.
The fellow will receive free accommodation from the University. Accommodations for this position is a private room with private bathroom, with shared living room/kitchen. For married fellows, a limited number of studio type private apartments are available; however please note that there is usually a waiting list for such units. You may consider renting off-campus for larger/fully private accommodation options (see next question); however, there is no additional living allowance in this case.
A private health plan is provided in addition to the regular Social Security plan.
Yes, this is total annual research support for the first year. It may increase in the following year depending on (co)authorship in SU-affiliated publications during the first year.
The fellows are not allowed to work outside Sabancı University, but can apply to any research grants in and outside Turkey.
You would need about one month of your standard salary as the salaries are paid at the end of the month. However, in case of need, you may apply for an advance on your salary.
Sabancı University will provide a visa letter addressing the local Turkish embassy.

Daily Life

On campus, English is the teaching language and is widely spoken. Istanbul is visited by millions of tourists each year and English is commonly used in the city center.
No, there is no mandatory rule and we have many researchers, academicians or business professionals who work at universities or companies with no knowledge of Turkish. Moreover, the University has a regular Turkish language program for interested foreigners on campus, in case you are interested in formally learning the language.
Sabancı University is 11 km from Sabiha Gökçen International Airport. A cab from there to the University is about 35-40 TL currently. The ride takes about 15 minutes.
