Abstract: The trend in aerospace, aeronautical, marine and offshore industries is to fabricate high performance and lightweight structures with low-cost in recent years. The state-of-the-art materials such as metallic glasses, glass composites and graphene type of nano-thick size structures are used widespread around the world for this purpose. On the other hand, the new production techniques like additive manufacturing are widely used to produce light weight as well as durable engineering structures. The durability essentially corresponds to damage tolerance which results in reliability. In order to produce such diverse engineering structures, one has to consider both high strength and toughness in model. Considering technological progress by means of computational modeling, both wide-range of length scales and multi-physics become inevitably substantial in one computational model. For this purpose, a state-of-the-art technique, peridynamic (PD) theory has been recently introduced by Dr. Stewart Silling in the Sandia National Laboratories, USA.  Peridynamics is a nonlocal continuum theory that reformulates the classical continuum mechanics introducing internal length parameters i.e., horizon. It strongly satisfies fundamental balance laws of classical continuum mechanics. The PD equation of motion has a form of integro-differential equation rather than partial differential equations. Hence, the damage modeling is inherent in its fundamental equations without causing any singularities. On the other hand, the internal length parameter, horizon, allows incorporating different length scales, i.e., nano to macro, in the same model. It is also possible to include various physical fields in the same equation with slight modifications such as thermal, moisture and electrical fields etc. Besides, the form of PD equations allows coupling of those fields including the mechanical field. Overall, this seminar deals with multiscale and multiphysics computational modeling of complex engineering structures from nano to macro level in the same equation field for damage predictions of diverse problems.

Bio: Dr. Çağan Diyaroğlu is currently working with academics at Sabanci University, Integrated Manufacturing Research and Application Center (SUIMC) for developing novel coupled Inverse Finite Element (iFEM) - Peridynamic method. He completed his undergraduate education in 2007 with the first rank as a high honor student in the department of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering at Yildiz Technical University. He also obtained the third ranked student in the faculty of mechanical engineering. After he completed his master study in the same department in 2009, he commenced his PhD in the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow, UK. He received his PhD degree in 2016 from the Naval Architecture, Ocean and Marine Engineering department in the field of marine structures applications by using Peridynamic theory. During his PhD study, he worked as a visiting researcher at the University of California, Berkeley. Dr. Diyaroglu worked almost four years in the University of Arizona, USA as a postdoctoral researcher and research scientist.  He was responsible for conducting research on computational damage mechanics and of writing proposals. He also supervised more than five PhD and MSc students there. In addition, he was the first researcher in the world to develop peridynamic models for simplified structures such as beams and plates and his publication on this topic received 92 citations since 2015. He has published in such prestigious journals as Composite Structures, Electronics, The International Journal of Solids and Structures and the International Journal of Hydrogen Energy. He has also held duties as a reviewer for publications such as the Journal of Mechanics, MDPI Materials, the Journal of Peridynamics and Nonlocal Modeling, and Ocean Engineering. He is the co-author of the book chapter in Marine Applications of Advanced Composite Materials. He is also co-author of 12 journal articles published in SCI-indexed high impact journals, and also prepared and presented over 30 conference papers on these topics.
