Description of the Incident

Chemical exposure on hand (fingers)

What Happened?

The researcher was working with EGDMA (Ethylene glycol dimethyl acrylate) and 4VP (4-vinylpyridine) and wearing nitrile gloves. 
The chemical penetrated gloves and caused irritation in the hand.

What went right?

  • Lab coats, gloves, closed-toe shoes, and long pants were worn while working.
  • The researcher washed the affected area with plenty of water for 5 minutes.

What should be done differently?

  • The gloves should be inspected prior to use in order to ensure there are no holes, tears or visible deterioration.

What corrective actions have been taken?

  • Gloves with EN 374 coded gloves up to elbow level should be used.

How can incidents like this be prevented?

  • While working with hazardous chemicals, choose appropriate gloves, according to the SDS of the chemical.
  • Check the gloves for rips, punctures, or pinholes.
