1. Description of the Incident:
Chemical exposure occurred due to acid cross-contamination through safety gloves during the filling of vials.
2. Course of the Incident:
While filling vials with formic acid, the lab worker touched their ear with a contaminated glove.
The exposure was mild. The incident was reported to the Medical Center.
The affected area was neutralized with a buffer solution and treated with a topical cream.
3. Proactive Measures:
- Do not touch your skin while wearing gloves.
- Hair should be tied back, and headphones should not be worn in the laboratory.
- Do not work alone; always work with a lab buddy.
4. Lessons Learned:
Lab work should not begin before wearing the necessary personal protective equipment (PPE),
and there should always be at least one other person present in the lab.
What Should We Do When Handling with Chemical Cross Contamination?
• Before working with chemical/acid solutions, ensure that safety showers/eyewash stations
are accessible and available in the lab you work.
• Use appropriate Personal Protective Equipment specified in SDS.
• Consider good laboratory practice i.e., tie back long hair, work with lab buddy, do not wear headphones while working.
• Always assume gloves may be contaminated and avoid touching the face or skin.
• Reinforce the importance of working with a lab buddy.
