Title: AI for Good – A Transdisciplinary Approach to Applied AI Research

Abstract: Artificial Intelligence (AI) is reshaping fields, driving innovation in healthcare, sustainability, security, and ethical decision-making. This talk presents a transdisciplinary approach to applied AI research, demonstrating how AI integrates computer science, biomedical engineering, environmental, and social sciences to address complex, real-world challenges. The session will explore key methodologies in explainable AI, machine learning, and computational modeling, focusing on practical problems. Key topics include AI-driven diagnostics, sustainable AI for environmental solutions, and explainable AI frameworks grounded in sustainability computing, highlighting AI’s potential to drive meaningful, long-term societal impact across diverse fields.

Bio: Dr. Polat Goktas is a Senior Researcher at the UCD School of Computer Science and Ireland’s Centre for Applied Artificial Intelligence (AI), University College Dublin, Ireland. His research focuses on AI, machine learning, computer vision, the Internet of Things, and explainable AI, addressing critical challenges in healthcare, security, and sustainability. His Ph.D. work integrated image acquisition, processing, AI and life sciences to develop label-free, high-throughput cellular analysis methods for in vitro diagnostics. As a Fulbright Doctoral Research Fellow at Harvard Medical School, he deepened his expertise in biomedical imaging and AI-driven healthcare solutions.

Throughout his career, Dr. Goktas has received prestigious honors, including the Young Scientist Award at the Lindau Nobel Laureates Meeting, the IEEE AP-S Doctoral Research Grant, the Marie Curie Individual Fellowship, and the METU Serhat Ozyar Young Scientist of the Year Award and among others. He is an Associate Editor for Fulbright Chronicles and PLOS One and contributes to the Marie Curie Alumni Association Newsletter and Sustainable Futures. He actively leads initiatives as Chair of the IEEE Young Professionals Innovation Hub Subcommittee, Vice-Chair of the MCAA (EU) Sustainability Working Group, and Sub-Lead Chairman of the IEEE EMBS SAC’s Professional Development Portfolio, driving innovation and interdisciplinary collaboration in AI.
