Bu ders, Einstein’ın Özel ve Genel Görelilik teorilerine hem MDBF hem de SSBF veya YBF öğrencilerinin izleyebileceği bir matematiksel basitlik seviyesinde giriş sağlamayı amaçlıyor.  Gerekli matematik bilgisi lise cebirinden ibaret.  Dersin esas metni Einstein’ın Genel Görelilik teorisini bulmasından hemen sonra 1916’da yazdığı bir popüler kitap olacak.  Bu kitap Homer kitabevinde bulunuyor. Ana konular: Görelilik ilkesi, uzay ve zamanın göreliliği, Lorentz dönüşümleri ve hızların toplanması, Minkowski’nin 4 boyutlu uzay-zamanı, Kütleçekiminin ivmelenen bir koordinat sistemine eşdeğerliliği ve Öklidyen olmayan bir uzay-zamanla ifade edilebilmesi, karadelikler, Genel Göreliliğin bütün Evrene uygulanması.

Konunun bilim tarihindeki yeri, felsefi anlamı ve önemi, doğru ve yanlış yorumları.

NS 200 Einstein’s Relativity

The course aims to introduce Einstein’s theories of Special and General Relativity at a mathematically elementary level that all students from FENS, FASS and FM should be able to follow.  The required mathematical proficiency consists of high-school algebra.  The main text for the course is a book written by Einstein in 1916, immediately after he had formulated the General Theory of Relativity.  The book is available at Homer bookstore. The main topics are: The principle of relativity, the relativity of space and time, Lorentz transformations and the addition of velocities, Minkowski’s 4 dimensional space-time, the equivalence of gravitation to an accelerated system of coordinates and to a geometric description in terms of non-Euclidean space-time, blackholes, application of General Relativity to the Universe as a whole.
