Topics on Algebraic Curves
Arnaldo Garcia
IMPA, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
Arnaldo Garcia is internationally renowned in the field of algebraic curves and function fields, in particular, over fields of prime characteristic. His early work deals with singularities of plane algebraic curves. Later he and his students developed the theory of Weierstrass points and Stöhr-Voloch Theory further, which relates the classical theory of Weierstrass points on Riemann surfaces to the arithmetic of algebraic functions over finite fields. His recent work on towers of algebraic curves over finite fields attracted much attention, not only because of the number theoretical implications but also due to its applications in coding theory.
His lectures at Sabanci University are aimed at general audiance, in particular graduate students. After an introductory part on elementary topics in geometry of algebraic curves, advanced recent research topics such as duality theory for curves and Weierstrass point theory will be presented.
