Managing the Unmanageable: Cryptography for DRM

Abstract:
Digital Rights Management (DRM) is an emerging area of pressing interest that deals with the protection of intellectual property rights in digital content distribution. It is a multidisciplinary area combining cryptographic technology, software and systems research, information processing methods as well as legal, social and economic aspects. This talk will review the major challenges of the DRM problem today with a focus on its cryptographic aspects, overview the state of the art techniques as well as point to directions of future research.

Brief Bio:
Aggelos Kiayias is an Assistant Professor of Computer Science and Engineering and director of the Crypto-DRM Laboratory of the School of Engineering at the University of Connecticut. Dr. Kiayias holds a Ph.D. and an M.A. from the City University of New York, and a B.S. from the Mathematics Department of the University of Athens, Greece. Dr. Kiayias was a Fulbright fellow, a recipient of an NSF CAREER Award and the Co-Program Chair of the ACM DRM Workshop 2004. His research in cryptography has been funded by the National Institute of Standards and Technology, the National Science Foundation, the Secretary of the State of Connecticut and the Department of Defense.
