New Graduate Course: MFG 512 Mechanics of Solids
Mechanics of Solids - 21230 - MFG 512 - 0
Instructor: Asst. Prof. Eralp Demir e-mail:eralpd@sabanciuniv.edu
Pre-requisite: None
Objective of the course: To learn the basic theories and the necessary background for mechanics of deformable solids, to gain the ability to develop constitutive models for mechanics related problems, applications of solid mechanics problems with introductory level use of finite element method.
Description:Solid Mechanics course provide the necessary background to analyze and simulate mechanical behavior of deformable solids. The course starts with the refreshment of the engineering mechanics, and proceeds with the introduction of vector & tensor algebra. The course introduces continuum mechanics concepts like, stress-strain measures, equilibrium, large deformation theory and elasticity. The lectures also consist of composite ply mechanics specific to elasticity problems. The course also contains introduction of isotropic plasticity and crystal plasticity concepts for metal plasticity related applications. The topics covered include applications of solid mechanics concepts to elasticity examples with a commercially available finite element software. This course explains finite element elements concepts like elements, nodes, nodal forces and nodal displacements. Finally, course will teach the finite element method with 1-D finite element analysis examples in order to give better insights on the principles of finite element method at introductory level.
