ENS 48001 Special Topics in FENS: Materials Selection in Product Design

Dear Students,

You can register the course of ENS 48001 in add drop period. The course information is below.

Instructor: Özge Akbulut

Course Schedule:

Monday 8:40-9:30 FENS 2019
Tuesday 8:40-10:30 FENS L047

Course summary: The course is focused on materials selection for mechanical and the usage-based design of common objects. It offers hands on experience in product design through a class project that includes prototyping, testing of the prototype, and iterations in the product development.

Aim: To equip students witha systematic materials selection procedure for product design based on properties, cost, availability, and processability of materials.

Learning outcomes:

·         To establish a quantitative and qualitative understanding between design parameters andproperties of materials

·         To optimize the performance of materials for engineering applications

·         To implement the principles of sustainability and minimized environment impact with respect to energy consumption and recyclability of engineering components in the selection of materials and the production process

·         To develop a framework for assessing engineering failures (please see the note for Week 8)

·         To be able to use available tools (e.g., computer programs) in materials selection

Grading:

Class project (60%)

Students will be given a predetermined problem that can be solved with a tool or a device or through an innovative improvement of an existing tool or device. They are expected to present at the different stages of product development: i) idea, ii) prototype, iii) testing of the prototype, and iv) final product.

Term exams (40%), no final.

P.S: On Tuesday, Feb. 14th, 8:40-10:30 am, Zaxe (a 3D printing company) will give a presentation on applications and future of 3D printing as a part of ENS 481 (Materials Selection in Product Design class). They will also bring a 3D printer for demo. You are all welcome to attend to this session, the presentation will be in Turkish. http://zaxe.com/en/
