Abstract:
In today’s competitive environment, manufacturers aim to design optimum products to satisfy the customer expectations while minimizing their cost of development and manufacturing. In order to achieve this, they need to estimate the customer usage in different markets and consider the variation in critical characteristics of their product composed of many sub-systems produced by different suppliers. They are also under pressure of cutting down the prototype and testing costs to stay competitive in the market. Instead of using traditional approach where safety factors are determined based on experience, statistical and probabilistic methods are incorporated more into the product development procedures to achieve optimum design. In this seminar, reliability and robustness based optimization tools will be introduced and applications from automotive engineering will be presented. Studies focused on characterizing the variations in material properties, manufacturing effects, customer usage and their effects on component vibration and durability will be shared together with the state-of-the-art numerical methods for reliability and robustness based design optimization.
