Title:Discrete and Continuum Modeling for Complex Materials

Date/Time: 23 November 2022 / 13:40 - 14:30

Location: FENS 2019

Abstract:Recentlynew advanced manufacturing processes like 3-D printing have brought a new perspective to design and fabrication applications due to their ability to fabricate complex materials showing unconventional and exotic behaviors. Currently, additive manufacturing is seen as a clever solution in a more and more complex manufacturing environment, specifically in terms of customization, creativity, multifunctionality, and geometry. Therefore, development of new mathematical models is inevitable from the theoretical point of view. In this talk, discrete and continuum modeling approaches for the simulation of complex materials are discussed, particularly for investigating mechanical behavior of pantographic metamaterials. The applicability of the developed models is validated by various numerical predictions and experiments. Also, the potential of higher-gradient modeling via variational methods is highlighted for different applications.

Bio: Erden Yildizdag is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering at Istanbul Technical University. He is also a research fellow at the International Center for the Mechanics and Mathematics of Complex Systems (MeMoCS) in Italy.  He received his PhD in mechanical engineering from University of California, Berkeley in 2018. His main research interests include modeling and simulation of fluid-structure interaction phenomena and higher-gradient continuum modeling of complex materials.
