Abstract:From a very young age, we are told to brush our teeth for 2 minutes, 2 times a day. On the other hand, there is little guidance on how to spend those 2 minutes. In this work, we created an end-to-end ML solution that tracks the toothbrush inside the mouth to generate signals that can be used for user guidance. Our NN based solution takes 3D Accelerometer and 3D Gyroscope data as input and predicts probabilities for 12 (sub) segments at each timestamp. The solution was integrated into the Sonicare app (iOS + Android) and released as part of the Sonicare Prestige 9900 launch. The delivery was highlighted as a Grand Cru with 100M+ Euros business impact. Our contributions include: 1) Supervising a large digital clinical trial with 1500 participants. 2)Data Engineering from Video timelines to IMU with a novel approach to synchronize IMU and Video timestamps, 4)Training and evaluation of NNs, achieving 85% accuracy at 12 segment(s) 5)a continuous integration and delivery pipeline.

Bio:Tolga Eren holds BSc and PhD degrees from Sabancı University. Between 2012 and 2014, he worked on contactless measurement systems for the automotive industry at a startup with Sabancı alumni. He joined Huawei Research in 2014 as Group Leader for ML Research. In 2016, he joined Signify Research in Eindhoven, the Netherlands. He worked on coded light and in-situ AR based design tools for lighting solutions ranging from office spaces to stadium illumination. Since 2019, he is at Philips Research and he has been working on Personal Health topics to guide business units towards SW-driven hands-on ML solutions. He deployed real-world AI solutions for smart shavers, IPL hair removal devices, and the latest smart electric toothbrushes. Tolga has more than 15 patent grants. He is married and has a four year old daughter.
