“COMPUTER VISION AND PATTERN RECOGNITION RESEARCH ACTIVITIES AT VPA LABORATORY”

by Prof. Aytül Erçil, Sabanci University

Time: 14:30, Wednesday, Nov.16th, 2005
Location:  MDBF L045

Abstract:
This talk will give an informal overview of some of the computer vision and pattern recognition research activites that are taking place at Sabancı University, VPA Laboratory. I will outline the basic ideas and the underlying challenges and difficulties and some results. The projects  discussed will include ‘Texture modeling for defect analysis’, ‘multimodal
biometrics’, ‘invariant object recognition’, ‘computer aided reconstruction in archeology’.

Speaker Bio:
Prof. Erçil has been working in computer vision, pattern recognition areas for over 20 years. She has received a B.S. in Electrical Engineering and a B.S. in Mathematics in 1979 from Boğaziçi University, M.S. and PhD in Applied Math from Brown University, U.S.A in 1980 and 1983 respectively, has worked at General Research Laboratories, U.S.A. as 'senior research scientist' and as 'staff research scientist' for five years. She has been a faculty member at Boğazici University in 1988-2001 and has been at Sabancı University since 2001. Her specific research interests include: Invariant object recognition, shape modeling, texture analysis, biometrics, multi-modal classification. She is one of the pioneers in Turkey in the computer vision and pattern recognition area. She is the founding president of Turkish Pattern Analysis and Image Processing Society and member of the governing board for International Association of Pattern Recognition. She has been the founding director of BUPAM Pattern Analysis and Machine Vision Laboratory at Bogazici University and currently she is the founding director of VPALAB at Sabanci University which was selected by the European Union as a 'potential center of excellence'. Prof. Erçil has been involved in international research activities in all her academic life in Turkey. She has directed many national (Tubitak, DPT, TIDEB, TTGV) and international projects (Nato, FP4, Eureka, NSF, FP6, Nedo).
