Abstract:
Calculus of Variations provides a sound framework to attack common image processing problems, esp regularization(filtering), registration and segmentation problems. Several researchers have focused on these methods to attack their problems. In this presentation, the basis of these techniques, namely, the Euler-Lagrange Equation will be introduced. We will then talk about Diffusion Filters as they provide an informative link between the EL Eqns derived and the filters designed. The second part of the talk will focus  on 2 projects of VAVlab: Brain Connectivity Analysis and Polyp Enhancement for Virtual Colonoscopy. The presentation will continue with some examples of what is being done around the world. I will conclude with research opportunities/positions at Bogazici University, VAVlab.
