"The invariant subspace problem in perspective" Mert Çağlar

Abstract: The talk will consist of variations on a main theme, namely the invariant subspace
problem, one of the most important and still unresolved problems of functional analysis.
Having introduced the problem along with a brief historical background, some signicant
achievements from the multitude of results on the existence of invariant subspaces will be
discussed. Emphasis will be on the topics in close proximity to the area of positivity. We
will intend to make the talk accessible to graduate students with diverse backgrounds.
