Abstract:

This talk will cover the results of the research and development work carried on three different subjects: (1) the synthesis, characterization and antibacterial activities of polymers carrying quaternary ammonium compounds and norfloxacin as pendant groups; (2) the preparation and antibacterial activities of clay delivery systems; and (3) the synthesis and characterization of well-defined polyoxazoline polymers and the preparation of polyoxazoline-drug conjugates to treat various diseases including Parkinson’s disease (PD) and cancer. The talk will end with a brief discussion of a research plan expanding the current knowledge and experience in these areas into other disciplines and applications.

Bekir Dızman received his B.S. degree in Chemistry and B.A. degree in Business Administration at Koç University in 2001. He received his Ph.D. degree in Polymer Science and Engineering in the School of Polymers and High Performance Materials at the University of Southern Mississippi in 2005. He had worked as a Postdoctoral Researcher at the University of Southern Mississippi during 2005-2007. He joined Serina Therapeutics, Inc., which is a pharmaceutical company, as a Senior Scientist in 2007. He was promoted to Manager of Polymer Chemistry position in 2016 at the same company. He received his Associate Professor degree in Chemistry in 2018. He has 20 years of experience in Chemistry and Polymer Chemistry and 11 years of experience in pharmaceutical industry. He has worked on the synthesis and analysis of a variety of monomers, polymers and polymer-drug conjugates. More specifically, his research has focused on the following areas: synthesis and characterization of well-defined polyoxazoline polymers through cationic ring opening polymerization (CROP) and the use of these polymers as key raw materials for drug products produced for preclinical and clinical studies in the areas of cancer, pain, refractory epilepsy, and movement disorders such as Parkinson’s disease and restless leg syndrome; the synthesis and characterization of functional acrylic monomers and polymers; the synthesis and characterization of cyclopolymers carrying various functional groups; the synthesis and characterization of polymeric phase transfer catalysts; the synthesis and characterization of various water-soluble and organic-soluble polymers by utilizing free radical solution polymerization and photopolymerization techniques; the synthesis and characterization of antimicrobial monomers and polymers; the preparation of antimicrobial clay delivery systems. In his projects, he has been involved in research, development, pilot production, technology transfer, large scale manufacturing, preclinical and clinical development of various drug delivery platforms. He has 7 years of experience in Good Laboratory Practices (GLP), Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), technology transfer, auditing and budget preparation. He has published 3 patents, 11 journal articles, 3 book chapters and 25 preprints and posters. He is fluent in English. He is married and has two children.
