Volkan Özgüz  received BS and MSc degrees in electrical engineering from Istanbul Technical University and Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering from North Carolina State University, Raleigh, North Carolina. He was Fulbright and NATO Fellow during graduate studies. From 1986 to 1987, he was a visiting assistant professor at North Carolina State University and scientist at Microelectronic Center of North Carolina. From 1987 to 1989, he was the manager of the Advanced Processes Dept. at Teletas-Alcatel. From 1989 to 1995, he was a research faculty at the University of California at San Diego.  From 1995 to 2010, Dr. Ozguz was the Chief Technology Officer and Senior Vice President at Irvine Sensors Corporation. He was the founding director of the Sabancı University Nanotechnology Research and Application Center at Sabancı University between 2010 and 2017.  He is currently advisor to the President of the Sabancı University.

Dr. Ozguz has been working in the semiconductor technology, packaging, microelectronics manufacturing and nanotechnology fields since 1979. He has extensive R&D and project management experience in the design and implementation of microelectronic, nanoelectronic and optoelectronic systems including fabrication technologies, process design and integration, facility operations and technology transfer. He led pioneering development efforts in chip-to-chip optical interconnects, 3D packaging and integration for heterogeneous systems. He was in the founding team of eight start-ups and spin-offs. He also served in the boards of several high-tech companies. He contributed to the technical due diligence of several high tech companies during the fund raising and investment stage.

Dr. Ozguz authored over 30 journal articles, many invited talks and conference publications, 5 book chapters, 20 patents and numerous patent applications. He is a senior member of IEEE Electron Devices, Communications and Components-Packaging-Manufacturing Technologies Societies.  Dr Ozguz served as a  member of several committees and various government advisory panels including: Country Delegate at the EU Directorate of Research, Nanotechnology Manufacturing, Production and Biotechnology Program Committee (NMPB-PC);  Delegate at High Level Group of EU Member States on Nanoscience and Nanotechnologies;  Member of Scientific Board for European Coordinated Research on Long-term Challenges in Information and Communication Sciences & Technologies;  “Lighthouse” for European Technology Integrating and Innovation Platform on Nanotechnology – NanoFutures.

Design and integration of Heterogeneous Systems; integration of 3D technologies and nanotechnologies, low power system implementation using 3D integration and nanoelectronics; nano to micro and macro interfaces and nano-packaging; miniaturization for wearable implantable biomedical systems; cognitive systems using neuromorphic approaches; memory-augmented processing for high productivity computing and communication
