Dr. Mehmet Kaynak

This prize of the Leibniz Association goes to the IHP

At the annual meeting of the Leibniz Association in Berlin, Dr. Mehmet Kaynak received this year's Young Investigator Award .

The prize is awarded in each of the categories " Social Sciences " and " natural sciences and engineering ." 2014 was the first time with three winners. Thus, the Leibniz Association honors three outstanding theses from the 89 member institutions

Dr. Mehmet Kaynak studied " Electronics and communication engineering " in the bachelor's degree at the Istanbul Technical University in Turkey. In his master study at the Sabancı University - Istanbul, he specialized in microelectronics. This is also the theme of his doctoral thesis (Feb’ 04) at IHP - Leibniz Institute for Innovative Microelectronics in Frankfurt (Oder ) and at the Technical University of Berlin, Faculty of Electrical Engineering and computer science.  "For me, the price is a great honor, it makes me happy that my work at IHP is recognized " says Dr. Kaynak . With his dissertation "RF MEMS switch modules in a 0:25 micron SiGe: C BiCMOS Process," he has made important contributions to future cost- and energy- efficient communication systems. Applications are in the sensors (e.g.  imaging for security systems and medical devices), in the fast wireless transfer of large amounts of data in radar technology, especially for civil aviation, and space technology.

The 33 -year-old researcher worked in 2007 for the first time as a student researcher at Sabancı University, together with IHP scientists, in an EU project. A year later he came to Frankfurt (Oder) as the head of the research in the field of RF MEMS (radio frequency micro-electro- mechanical systems). "IHP is one of the best research institutes. For my thesis, I found the necessary support here, with technical infrastructure and flexibility," adds Dr. Kaynak. He published 21 articles as the lead author and co-authored 52.

"The excellent PhD thesis of Dr. Kaynak is a flagship for our institution. He conducts research at a high-international level and, at the same time, promote young scientists. Dr. Kaynak initiated two major EU projects at IHP, proved in time his ability to function in complex scientific projects and organize international cooperation with industrial partners and academicians, effectively," says Prof. Dr. Bernd Tillack, Scientific and Technical Director of the IHP .
