Abstract:

Virgin Galactic’s suborbital space tourism vehicle (SpaceShipTwo), which is based on hybrid rocket propulsion, has recently started powered flight testing and expected to fly passengers in the near future. This would be the first substantial application of the hybrid rocket technology which will lead to the utilization of a large number of motors each year. Despite its historical significance, SpaceShipTwo’s nitrous oxide (N2O) and polymeric fuel based hybrid motor delivers a moderate Isp performance and expected to have a relatively low fuel utilization. Recent technological advances made by Space Propulsion Group Inc. (SPG) have resulted in the development of high performance hybrid rockets without compromising their simplicity, cost and safety advantages over the solid and liquid propulsion systems. The new liquid oxygen based advanced hybrids deliver 330-340 seconds of vacuum Isp with better than 98% fuel utilization. It is believed that this new promising technology can be quite enabling for advanced suborbital systems (including space tourism applications) and also for orbital missions.
