Abstract:With the invention of Bitcoin, blockchain technology became available for new applications. This led the way to new technologies like NFT, Web3, and Metaverse. However, due to misinformation and lack of knowledge, these new technologies come with many misconceptions. For instance, cryptocurrencies do NOT use encryption, NFTs are NOT stored in the blockchain, many Web3 applications are NOT decentralized, and the Metaverse do NOT exist yet. In this talk I will briefly explain these relatively new technologies, main misconceptions, and possible challenges.

Bio: Cihangir Tezcan is the head of Department of Cyber Security at Informatics Institute and the director of Cyber Security Center at Middle East Technical University. Before joining the Informatics Institute in 2019, he was a post-doctoral researcher at Ruhr-Universität Bochum and a teaching assistant at École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne. Cihangir Tezcan received the BSc degree in Mathematics and MSc and PhD degrees in Cryptography from Middle East Technical University in 2007, 2009, and 2014, respectively.
