Abstract: Increasing competition to achieve higher performance in several industries, such as aerospace, led to a shift of emphasis toward the development of new methods for nonlinear system modeling, analysis, and identification. In this seminar, a recently developed experimental modal analysis method for nonlinear systems will be presented. The method includes a novel response-controlled step-sine testing (RCT) technique for nonlinear identification and constructing a modal model with response-dependent modal parameters. This approach provides an excellent tool for modeling nonlinear systems, and it is most useful when multiple nonlinearities coexist at different locations; for instance, in modeling a structure with many bolted connections. The method is capable of making testing even at unstable branches of frequency response functions (FRFs) when there is strong nonlinearity. The Harmonic Force Surface concept that helps us to plot the measured frequency responses with their unstable branches will also be discussed. The seminar will include the application of the method on various real structures varying from a missile to a miniature piezoelectric actuator.
