Abstract:Machine learning algorithms process large amounts of data to produce accurate models. This data is usually in the form of text and images which are mostly related to or generated by humans. Privacy is a concern when such data could be linked to humans. Therefore novel methodologies and standards have been developed to address privacy concerns during the data collection, before the data is published, and when machine learning models are built. The root of privacy concerns is unfair treatment or discrimination. Recent studies have shown that machine learning models may make discriminatory decisions based on gender or race. This could be the result of biased data sets on which the models are trained, or the algorithms themselves may have inherent bias. In this talk we are going to start with privacy issues, and continue with the examples of biased/discriminatory behaviour of machine learning models together with our recent research findings on popular search platforms.
