Abstract: The landscape of global communication systems is undergoing a transformative change with the integration of the Internet of Things (IoT), positioning itself as a cornerstone for a sustainable digital future. This talk explores IoT's expansive role in fostering sustainable methods within various industries, including smart urban development, precise agricultural practices, and energy-efficient production techniques. Initially, we outline the concept of IoT and its related ecosystem. As we progress, the transition from traditional IoT to Industrial IoT (IIoT) emerges as a critical component of Industry 4.0. We will focus on the function of wireless protocols, especially RFID technology, in facilitating the adoption of digital twins across different sectors. The discussion will include practical applications such as using digital twins for the enhancement of HVAC systems' energy efficiency, improving the accuracy of agricultural processes, and streamlining operations in smart warehousing solutions. Moreover, we will consider the significant role of satellite communications in broadening IoT's connectivity, underscoring its contribution to the sustainability of digital networks. Through real-world examples, this talk will survey the advancements and challenges of IoT implementations in sustainability, marking the strides and hurdles on the path to a more sustainable future.
