Abstract:  This talk shall present a few recent results concerning the stability of sheared equilibria in ideal magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) equations. In particular, for a general class of non-monotone shears with non-degenerate critical points, linear damping for the vertical components of the velocity and magnetic field, and depletion for the horizontal components are mathematically justified. In addition, a particular case with Alfv´en speed of the form y2 + κ, κ ≥ 0, is studied, for which the behavior as κ → 0+ is captured.

Bio: Han Liu obtained his PhD in mathematics from University of Illinois at Chicago in 2020, and is currently a postdoctoral researcher at Center for Stability, Instability and Turbulence at NYU Abu Dhabi. His research mainly focuses on partial differential equations in plasma physics, namely, magnetohydrodynamics. Besides mathematics, he is fond of the rich culture of Türkiye.
